Expatriates Find Reasonably Priced Real Estate in Sunny Southern Spain

Sucina, Spain and Vera, Spain

The area known as Costa Almeria is located in southeastern Spain and is a very dry, hot region with nearly 300 days of sunshine a year.  It is probably familiar to many Americans because it has been the shooting location for numerous "spaghetti westerns," including A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.   Many British, as well as Spanish, come here to enjoy the nearly 200 miles of coastline, and developers have begun to build resort properties, some of which have reasonably-priced units for sale.

One such development is the Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort by Polaris World in the small, rustic village of Sucina, about 10 miles from the Mediterranean coast and 10 miles from the edges of the city of Murcia (population 750,000 in metro area).  This resort is centered around a championship course designed by Jack Nicklaus and boasts 1,864 two-bedroom apartments, along with a wealth of amenities, including a town center with restaurants, pubs and markets; a fitness center with a spa, swimming pool and tennis courts; a medical clinic with a pharmacy and 24/7 security.  These apartments start at $163,400 USD.

A second development called Costa Almeria is further south and is in the historic town of Vera, on the road to the seaside towns of Garrucha and Mojacar Playa.   This property has two-bedroom apartments, two-bedroom duplexes and three-bedroom semi-detached villas.  Prices start at $199,735 USD and go as high as $359,265 USD.

The company promoting (but not building) these two developments is a British firm called Escape to Spain and they can be reached at propertysales@escapetospain.co.uk.  Costa Almeria and Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort are just two of several new resorts with which the company works.  Others are closer to the coast, but prices are higher.
