Fishing in Panama
Panama Fishing Available
Species Pinas Bay, Panama offers some of the world's most popular game fish
including Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Pacific Sailfish, Wahoo, Dorado, Yellowfin
Tuna, Grouper, Roosterfish, Snapper and Amberjack. Click on any of the photos
below for a larger view. www.TropicStar.com Fishing Guideline The chart and monthly breakdown is a guideline; many factors go into
the migratory path. Water temperature, wind, current and bait can cause these
normal patterns to fluctuate. We are only 6 degrees off the equator; our seasons
are the opposite of the United States. FISHING AT TROPIC STAR LODGE All species of
billfish and non-billfish can be caught year-round in the pristine waters off
Piñas Bay. The prime Black Marlin season runs from December into April. The
Pacific Sailfish start moving in April through June. July brings another run of
Marlin; many in the five hundred pound range. Most of our fishing is done six to
fifteen miles offshore in calm waters. In late January and February the north
wind brings the cooler water and tailing Marlin. That's the only time it can get
a bit bumpy. Our fleet of 31' foot Bertram's is the perfect boat for fishing at
Piñas Bay. The word "Panama" means "an abundance of fish". Piñas Bay truly lives
up to this meaning. In the waters around the Lodge, you can catch Dolphin,
Yellowfin Tuna, Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, Rainbow Runner,
and Mackerel. We catch a few "Pacific" tarpon (which made the trip through the
canal) every year in the 50 to 100 pound range. Black Marlin, Blue Marlin and
Sailfish, can be caught "right outside our front door," making this a truly
unique location. THERE HAVE BEEN MORE I.G.F.A. WORLD RECORDS BROKEN IN PINAS BAY
THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD -- over 250 World Records! Tropic Star Lodge
holds over fifty world records at the present time! Most of the records at the
Lodge were taken on light and ultra light line -- which is what Piñas Bay is
recognized for throughout the World! Also, recently we have recorded over 40
IGFA Junior Angler World Records! Many people fish Tropic Star Lodge to catch their first Black Marlin,
Blue Marlin or Pacific Sailfish. Our crews can help you as much or as little as
you require. We issue beautiful certificates for those who catch their first
billfish at the lodge. November: We open the last week of
November with our TSL Tournaments. The Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish,
Yellowfin, and 40-60 pound Dorado are typically there waiting for us. The
inshore fishing for Roosterfish and Cubera Snapper is excellent as well. It also
marks the end of the rainy season. Debris-lines can form offshore that hold lots
of bait and fish. The seas are very calm; you can experience a shower, mainly
onshore& January: Considered one of the most
popular months for Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna (100-200-pounds),
Big Sailfish (over 100-pounds) and Big Dorado (50-60 pound range). It can get
bumpy near the end of the month, as the north wind brings cooler water and
tailing Marlin. February: Very similar to January.
Offshore the Blue Marlin and Striped Marlin like the cooler water, and the Black
Marlin is on the Zane Grey Reef. One of the best months for Grand
Slams. March: One of the top months for Big
Yellowfin Tuna. Black Marlin, Blue Marlin and an occasional Striped Marlin are
on the menu too. Can be one of the best months for inshore fishing for Big
Roosterfish and Cubera Snapper. April: Can be a great transition
month. The wind starts coming out of the south, bringing bait-balls of Sardines
down the coast, which signals the arrival of hungry Sailfish etc. Black Marlin,
Blue Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna can be caught as well. A great month for inshore
fishing for Roosterfish and Cubera Snapper. The seas are typically flat
calm. May: The Sailfish are moving in
close to shore following the bait. This is a time where we focus on catching
Sailfish, many within 2 miles from shore. They can be caught offshore as well.
Marlin can be caught, but we tend to spend more time racking up numbers of
Sailfish. Inshore fishing can be very productive. We start to get some showers,
mostly onshore. Very calm seas. June: Very similar to May, the
Sailfish season is in full swing. Not uncommon to get 20 bites per day. Inshore
can be a bonanza. Very Calm seas. July: One of our best months for a
variety of fish. Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, along with Sailfish and Dorado round
out the species& Grand Slams are not uncommon. Inshore fishing can be very
productive. One of our cooler months, due to overcast an occasional showers,
mostly onshore. Calm seas& August: A variety month for billfish,
Big Yellowfin Tuna can be caught as well. Wahoo start showing up in numbers.
Inshore fishing for Roosterfish and Cubera Snapper can be very good. Occasional
showers, mostly onshore and calm seas. September: The Black & Blue Marlin
fishing can be very good& Wahoo fishing should be at its best, inshore fishing
can be very productive. The weather is very similar to August. We close for
maintenance from the third week of September till the third week of
November. Equipment: We furnish all of your
equipment, which includes; Shimano Tiagra reels and Cape Fear rods from 20-50
lb. class. We have spinning rods and reels from the 12-20 lb. class. We do not
furnish any fly-fishing equipment. The best size fly rod to bring is 14 Wt. 9
foot rods for Sailfish and Dorado etc. You can use a 12 Wt., but a 14 Wt. will
give you more backbone to lift a big fish to the surface. Any billfish fly
should work; pink and white are good colors. Many like flies that are made of
billfish hair, which is a type of fiber.
