Alfred
Lake
Alfred is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the
population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 3,944 [1]. It is part of the Lakeland--Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical
Area.
The city was established
soon after the South Florida
Railroad reached the area in 1883. It had a number of early names,
including Fargo, Chubb and Bartow Junction. The name Lake Alfred was adopted in
1913, and was taken from the nearest large lake, named for Alfred Parslow, who
came to Florida in 1877 and obtained a charter to build the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West
Railroad.
Lake Alfred has significant industry for its small size, mostly
due to its location on the mainline railroad linking Miami to New York City. We
are proud to be the Home of Florida Distillers, a subsidiary of Todhunter
international. Their large complex produces many brand name alcohol and
non-alcoholic products, which are shipped nationwide and
overseas.
Also located in Lake Alfred is Grower's Fertilizer which is a
manufacturer and wholesaler of agricultural fertilizer and chemical products.
Our City's position between the major markets of Tampa and Orlando makes Lake
Alfred a logical and economical choice for locating manufacturing and
distribution facilities. In comparison to the big City Markets, Lake Alfred has
ample utilities, a skilled work force, open land with correct zoning, excellent
highway and railway access, and lower overhead and property
prices.
Our community also experiences a significantly lower crime rate,
making work and family life more enjoyable and safe. There is ample land in Lake
Alfred and to the East and West, some currently zoned land for
commercial/industrial, some with rail access, that is available for future
growth.
On America's Bicentennial, Lake Alfred celebrated in style at
Lions Park and fireworks filled the sky. As the city entered the 1990's, Lake
Alfred once again experienced periodic growth in our community. Lake Alfred
began to see the effects of Orlando's development in our city. Commuter
residents became more prevalent and Lake Alfred developed as a popular antique
shopping area within Central Florida.
